Scarpino AMIU municipal landfill

Created on 1968, the municipal landfill has been for decades the only waste collection point for the entire port area. Despite the conclamate risk created by the presence of a landfill in high altitude and by the presence of fresh water basins nearby, the municipal landfill operated until 2014 when it ran out of storage volume. Water analyses requested by Carabinieri and conducted by Signupam at Sestri Ponente port in 2005, recorded a high rate of pollutants attributable to the dump’s leachate both in sediments and in fish fauna; examined mullet reveals "serious alterations in the structure and morphology of their organs".
