Due to the lack of electrified docks, the stationing of ferries and cruise ships with engines running. it creates noise and air pollution in the port area. The polluting gases released (NOx and SOx) are the main cause of cardiovascular disease such as heart failure, arrhythmias and myocardial ischemia. Furthermore, they are also the cause of the worsening of all existing respiratory diseases and of the common ocular  irritations and mucous membranes one. Genoa has never been under epidemiological investigations relating to the incidence of diseases in the proximity of the port area. A benchmark can be run with the survey carried out in Civitavecchia port in 2015: compared to the rest of the citizenship, the residents within 500 meters of the port had a mortality 51% higher for neurological diseases and 31% higher for lung cancers.
